Life in a Bubble explores the psychological dissonance of maintaining a personal sanctuary amidst global conflict. Created as a direct response to the recent Iran war bombings, Mapys depicts her recurring protagonists, Pink Teddy and Panda, reclining in a pristine, vibrant meadow. The characters are situated at the terminus of a pronounced yellow brick path, which explicitly functions as a Wizard of Oz reference, symbolizing their journey toward an idealized, safe destination.
While a distant city is consumed by chaotic streaks of red, green, and blue, the characters remain insulated within a highly saturated, “happy” palette of pinks and yellows. The use of collage, physically cutting and pasting the figures, highlights the artist’s sense of disconnection from external reality.
